Minehead Barbarians RFC U14’s v Bridgwater RFC
Sunday 13 December 2009
Minehead playing their last match before the Christmas break finished 2009 in great style in a
game that reflected the true spirit of the game.
With Bridgwater several players short Minehead were happy to loan the visitors several
players including some U15’s to make up their side and ensure that both teams started the
game on a level footing.
With a reminder from the coach about their habit of being slow to start still fresh in their
minds Minehead made the best possible start with an opening try in the first minute. From a
scrum on the visitors 22m line Jaques picked up from No 8 to make good ground before
being tackled and offloading to Dunton in close support who crashed through the final tackle
to score.
Minehead were obviously up for this game and were constantly threatening the visitors
defence who were having to kick ball to relieve the pressure. However, it wasn’t until the
14th minute that Minehead were able to stretch the lead. Centre Munson evaded oncoming
tacklers and jinking his way through the visitors back line to score under the posts.
Minehead were very much in control of the match and were unlucky not to score from a
quick penalty taken by the sharp thinking Evans. But it was another set piece move that
resulted in the final score of the half when Evans gave Fly-Half Wilkins quick ball to crash
through a couple of last ditch tackles to score.
To ensure that loaned players and subs all had a chance to represent the home team
extensive changes were made at half time. Nevertheless, the quality of Mineheads rugby
continued to shine through.
Constant pressure from the forwards created plenty of space for Mineheads pacey back line
especially out wide. A powerful run by winger Kelly along the touchline looked to have
opened the second half scoring only for the referee to wave play-on as he was still short of
the line. Fortunately, Senior was close at hand to carry the ball the extra few metres and
score in the corner.
Bridgwater were always being forced to kick out of defence but with Elford returning at full-
back, Minehead had a safe pair of hands to gather the high ball and run it straight back.
Indeed it was one such move that resulted in a try for the full-back.
Stand-in prop Willes was involved all over the pitch both in attack and defence and
epitomised the performance of a number of Minehead players. He was duly awarded Man of
the Match at the final whistle with Minehead running out 34-0 winners.
