Back to Minis and Juniors
Minehead hosted Taunton on Sunday and despite having a weakened side with three of their strongest players
out though holidays and sickness, turned in what was undoubtedly their best performance of the season.
Having been beaten soundly at Weston Super Mare in their last game, confidence was low, but you would
have never known. They did however take a while to get warmed up and things looked ominous when the
strong Taunton "A" side ran in three first half tries. There were some early missed tackles but as the half went
on the side became more determined being led my both Nathan Hemborough and Archie Marsh who were
throwing themselves into the opposition and inspired the other boys the highlight of which was captain Joe
Morton's tackle just before the interval. The half finished with stand in scrum half Thomas Howard, settling
into the job well, scoring from close range. The half time interval only allowed the home side to take a
breather before getting right back into the game and it looked like they had scored when a fine Robert Vickers
run was brought back for an earlier offence. Joe Camp, having his strongest game for the club was getting
stuck in and then a great run from winger Harry Dixon was halted short of the line. Taunton then added there
final try for a reasonably comfortable victory but the home side tackled like heroes and rucked and mauled
better than had been seen previously.
With the seasiders having the momentum, Taunton "B" were not looking forward to the prospect. The
Minehead forwards of Hemborough, Vickers and Tom Day were winning the majority of the ball particularly in
the scrum and this together with being first to the breakdowns set up a display of spectacular running and
passing to entertain the crowd. It started with Hemborough scoring two typical tries with long, strong runs
from his own half and then Howard, shining in this game, scoring from close range. Robert Vickers then added
to his season's tally and just to show they needed to defend, Dixon produced two excellent defensive tackles
to keep the visitors out. Archie Marsh who had shone in the tight then scored his first of the morning and then
Dixon scored just on half time following the best move of the day involving both Marsh and Hemborogh. It
was only really a question of how many Minehead would score but the Taunton defence held on well in the
second half despite Howard running in a try from a tap penalty. More good tackling from Dixon and a good
run from newcomer Will Lock then featured before Howard completed his hat-trick with a good pick up and
go, to leave the final score 40-0.
Minehead host Yatton next Sunday and will need to take this momentum into the game to ensure a win with
only top scorer William hawker returning from illness.
Many thanks
