29/11/09 - Minehead 25 South Molton 10
29/11/09 - Minehead 10 South Molton 10
Minehead hosted South Molton on Sunday having not played them at this level last year and
the game produced some creditable rugby in what were very difficult conditions.
Minehead lent a couple of players to the visitors to give them some added numbers and went
into an early lead straight from the kick off when centre Ben Pye put his head down and ran
from half way to touch down for a valuable opening score. Once again the small but mobile
Minehead side passed the ball much better than the opposition but the conditions didn't suit
this style of play and good handling proved difficult. When involved in the mauls the larger
South Molton side put constant pressure on the home team but when the opportunity came
to break the home team took it and a flowing move involving Pye, Archie Marsh, Robert
Vickers and Harry Dixon saw scrum half William Hawker touch down for a splendid score.
Some more pressure however brought the visitors within one score after they touched down
just before the interval.
Good defensive work was seen from both Thomas Howard in the centre and winger Dixon. A
good lineout by Minehead saw Tom Day and Joseph Lintern do some good work before the
ball was passed right down the line for Dixon to touch down after a good strong run. Despite
having the smaller pack the forwards of Day, Lintern and hooker Vickers won nearly every
scrum and provided the lively scrum half Hawker with plenty of ball which he made the most
of, scoring the fourth try to give Minehead a comfortable lead. The Devon boys scored a
consolation try before the end and Vickers burst clear to round the score off at 25-10.
The second game saw some more excellent tackling by Howard, Lintern and Pye which kept
the larger visitors at bay before Hawker sprinted away to put Minehead ahead. South Molton
equalised soon after and despite the seasons top scorer Hawker touching down for his 4th
try of the morning Minehead went into the interval with a slim lead. The second half saw a
couple of good breaks by Vickers, getting tackled when he looked through and Pye again had
some surging runs. With Minehead's Nathan Hemborough being a terror, playing for the
opposition the home side were put under pressure and it was largely down to him that South
Molton scored the equalising try to provide them with a deserved share of the spoils in the
second match.
Man of the Match on the day Harry Dixon.
