Wiveliscombe colts 10 - 12 MBRFC colts
In a hard fought local derby, it was the visiting Barbarians colts team which ended the day
victorious.
Minehead’s side was missing regulars Childs, Grove, and Dyer, but were boosted by the
availability of Ryan Lewis and Pete Deary. The return of these two powerful forwards was
important on Wivey’s wet pitch, although both did not start the game, but were brought on
during the first half.
Both teams were evenly matched on the day, and both showed great enterprise and effort
producing an exciting match where four
tries were shared evenly
The stormy weather dictated that this
would be a match dominated by the
forward play, and Minehead threw
themselves into the battle, driving
forward and rucking aggressively. The
first try came in the 17th minute when
Langdon broke from the No8 position,
he linked with scrum-half Claydon who
jinked over and scored by the posts for
the try which he converted.
Soon after, the home side struck back
with a try of their own, but this was
unconverted.
Lynch was forced out of the action by injury and was replaced by Gould who kept up the
pressure, Ryan Lewis also came into the game, adding not only weight but also powerful ball
carrying.
After 30 minutes Claydon shot over for his second try wide out, but this score went
unconverted. Once again Wiveliscombe struck back with another try of their own before the
break
The second-half saw no points scored but it did not lack for excitement, as both sides
continued to push for a vital score. With Wiveliscombe now having the benefit of the slope,
Minehead had to defend more. Mallinson, and Bradley in the centre, did good work, as did
Swan, Rossiter, and Webber in the pack. Kyle Lewis who had switched to full back for this
match, did brilliantly, fielding kicks and clearing his lines.
Despite Wiveliscombe’s best endeavours they could not breach the Barbarians defence, and
the final whistle meant the spoils in this local derby went to the visitors.
Joe Barrett was “man of the match” for an all action display.
