20/02/2010 - Withycombe 20 Minehead Barbarians 20 Withycombe got off to the perfect start and were 5-0 up within the first 5 minutes, having kicked off down the slope they won a turnover and mounted a sustained attack before a chipping through for the left winger to score wide out  and take a 5 –0 lead.   Withycombe continued to dominate the early exchanges opting for high balls down the right where they found Dominic Westcott in fine form , not missing a ball and getting in some excellent clearances . The Barbarians were again fielding a much changed side due to  Chris Thorne’s wedding  with no fewer than 7 colts in the side and  understandably took a while to settle but having opted  play an open game they were soon exerting pressure of their own, with Jack White almost going over on an individual run   Minehead got back on terms when Max Mallinson got a dream debut try , having charged down a kick out of defence  to gather and sprint in from the 22.   and level the scores at halftime.   The second half turned out to be a thriller  it looked for while as if Minehead were going to take control of the game . Scrum half and man of the match Jack Claydon set up the next score with a break from his own 5 metre line showing his class in evading tackle after tackle carrying  the ball to the Withycombe 22  before giving a long pass back inside to Scott Langdon who put Dom Westcott in near the posts . Mike Hutchinson added the points and soon after kicked a penalty to increase  the lead to 15 – 5 . but it was Withycombe who then went on the rampage scoring three tries to lead 20 –15 ,. Two  of which came from fine individual runs by each of their wingers   from deep positions  to add to a close range forward effort.   Minehead came right back and a slick midfield handling movement following a break by Mike Hutchinson saw Dom Wescott go over for his second try . Hutchinson’s kick drifted tantalisingly past the right hand post to leave the final scores level at 20-20   It was good to see Joe White come on for his first  senior appearance for 4 years having finally recovered from what once looked like a career ending broken ankle .   M GROVES .
