North Petherton 20 Minehead Barbarians 3.
This was the first meeting of these old rivals for 5 years and
Petherton in their promotion season proved to have the edge in key
positions where their support players always looked more hungry and
determined to make ground and exploit gaps then their visitors . The
match was spared the worst of the rain and wind that disrupted a lot
of other games but Minehead failed to take advantage of the wind
and slope in the first half. They started brightly enough. Centre Jack
White made a 40 metre break , deep into the Petherton 22 and from
the breakdown forced Petherton to concede a penalty in front of the
posts, duly kicked by Dom Westcott. On the half hour Petherton took
the lead with an unconverted pushover try . Right on half time
Minehead conceded a penalty 5 metres from the right hand touch ,
Petherton went for the catch and drive, the Minehead defence was
exemplary as play went through more than a dozen phases switching
right across field to the opposite touch line and back to where the
original offence had occurred. Minehead were penalised again and this
time Petherton opted for the scrum but failed to get over the line , to
leave them just 5-3 up at half time.
A Petherton penalty soon after the re-start was the only score until
the last quarter Minehead were trying to run the ball out of defence
where their best forays upfield were spearheaded by Scott Langdon
who displayed the energy and enthusiasm in support that was
needed keep his side in a game in which it was Petherton’s superiority
in support that eventually gave them control Their full back made a
clean break through the midfield to release their strong running centre
who put the winger over in the corner A great conversion made it 15-
3 . The final score resulted from a similar well supported move ,
stopped initially by a great Tom Bishop tackle but taken over from the
ruck . The kick from the corner hit the post . Final score 20-3.
Jason Coates made a welcome return, coming on early to replace the
injured Luke Browne and Rob Webber showed his versatility when
switched to the wing in a last quarter reshuffle, where he made some
determined runs and created space for himself from deep positions.
