07/11/2009 - Minehead Barbarians 12 - 17 Newquay Hornets IT has to be said that this was a poor match between two teams who are both going through a bad patch and struggling near the foot of the table. Newquay’s victory was well deserved despite having much the worst of the forward exchanges both in the set and line-out where Minehead were much improved. However, the Minehead midfield seemed devoid of ideas in attack and totally disorganised in defence. In the first half, the forward pressure forced the visitors to concede three very kickable penalties but dall were missed and the half ended scoreless when on another day the Barbarians could and should have had a comfortable nine-point cushion. Within five minutes of the second half, Minehead went ahead when Ross Cox, playing his first game in Minehead shirt for seven years, went over to round off a forward drive. David Farmer added the points and it looked as though Minehead were at last about to take control. It is understood that Cox has been released by Taunton until Christmas to give him an opportunity to gain fitness and game time with his home club and his experience will no doubt be of great value. However, Newquay exploited a total lack of marking to enable centre Rob McIntyre to run through a huge hole and score an unconverted try. Things quickly went from bad to worse for Minehead when a wild pass was intercepted by hooker Lee Pascoel who ran in from halfway to score a try, excellently converted by scrum half Sam Cullen. Newquay made it 17-5 soon after, number eight Tim Eustace turning up on the wing to take advantage of an overlap again caused by slack marking. They were now running the ball with confidence and looked capable of going further ahead, but it was the Minehead pack who put further life in the game, Dave Swann rounding off another catch and drive to bring things back to 17-12 but it came too late and the Hornets deserved their victory.
